A lot of modest outfits involve skirts and dresses, which means that a long cotton underskirt is essential to have! Here’s why:
Away with see-through problems!
Most skirts and dresses have some transparency issue. Even though they may not look like it, a quick way to check is to hold it up in front of a light source and see if you can look through it. It might seem fine, but when you walk out in the natural light the silhouette of your body may show through! You can fix this with the cotton underskirt layer.
The skirt is useful in the summer when you reach for lighter (and therefore more prone to transparency) clothing items. Cotton is a very breathable fabric so it allows for good airflow underneath the skirt. It also works well in the winter when you want extra layers under fabrics to keep you warm, without adding bulk.
Slits or a low hemline? Fixed.
I’ve been tricked so many times by what I think is a super cute maxi skirt/dress, only to discover that it has a slit in it. Depending on the style, some skirts/dresses can still be worn with the cotton underskirt underneath to provide coverage. Since this underskirt is loose and plain, it will work well with skirts/dresses that have smaller slits in them- like suit skirts, for example.
Another bonus is that shorter skirts/dresses can be made longer with the long underskirt. This also depends on the style of the skirt/dress since sometimes it may look better to have a textured petticoat underneath. For most purposes though, it will add length without looking weird!
Good-bye to static cling!
Cotton is a neutral fabric, so you don’t need to deal with static cling from the skirt. This means that it’ll also smooth out your outfit and prevent it from sticking to you! This will protect you from unwanted fabric lines- most of the time wearing one layer of clothing isn’t enough to prevent certain outlines from showing. It also keeps the skirt/dress from going between your legs when you’re walking for added modesty points!
A long cotton underskirt is definitely one of the most practical items to have on hand!
